Discovering More About Your Local Retail Owner

Say hello to the Las Vegas native Barbara Frank, who owns and operates five of The UPS Store locations in Nevada along with her husband John. Strong family values and well-founded community ties have helped Barbara build a storied career in one of the busiest cities in the United States.

Barbara was raised in Las Vegas and received her business management degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). After spending 20 years in the banking industry, she spent a brief term as a real estate agent working with her husband. When the housing market took a turn, Barbara and John decided to look into owning a small "mom and pop mail supply business." In 2004, they were offered a chance to own The UPS Store center on Flamingo and Maryland Parkway and they were very interested. They knew it was fate when they found out that the previous store owner had worked with Barbara in banking. "It was like dé·jà vu!" Barbara says. The transition of ownership was incredibly smooth.

It's a Family Affair

What started as a mission to get their two younger daughters through college, led to an acquisition of up to 11 stores at one point. Barbara and John's two youngest daughters became involved. They started working part-time during their high school and college years. It truly became a family affair when Barbara and John's grandkids started working during the holidays. One of their grandsons currently works for them while he's finishing college, while two others are still finishing High School.

The Team is Family

Their current ownership of five stores is managed with the help of an awesome team that has stayed with the Franks for over 10 years. "Our team has become family. We all have developed and evolved together," Barbara fondly says. She and her husband like to bring the store teams together every six months and organize a training, "Jeopardy-style." They try to make it fun by organizing teams and awarding prizes. Barbara says, "We still have older employees that come back and say how they have a lot of great memories from their time with us."

You're Shipping It–Vegas Style

In addition to a robust clientele that includes UNLV, Clark Community College, and the local high schools, Barbara receives a lot of tourism business. What would tourists be shipping? Well, as you can imagine, the usual things like suitcases, and retail items they've purchased on shopping trips but also a fair share of the unusual items, such as wedding cake tops. Las Vegas is the self-proclaimed "Wedding Capital of the World," and so, Barbara sees quite a number of these cake tops every month.

Positivity is the Key

Barbara's aunt and uncle were her mentors and the ones she attributes with instilling in her entrepreneurial spirit and values. They owned a Best Western in downtown Las Vegas where Barbara had worked, and notably, where she and John met. Barbara's aunt always taught her "to have a positive outlook on life and business, be honest and kind and hope that we can positively touch someone else's life."

Fishing and Football

In their downtime, John and Barbara pack up the cars with their extended family, including five grandkids and head to Lake Tahoe for fishing and hiking. "I want to get that quality time in with the grandkids before they're too old to cuddle," Barbara says. In addition to family excursions, you can find Barbara and John on any given Sunday watching football, as both are avid Green Bay Packers fans.

Next time you're in one of Barbara's Las Vegas store locations, be sure to say hello and ask her about those grandkids!
